I just finished burning in my new combo of the Nuforce Icon Mobile and NE-8 earphones. I'm using a Sansa Fuze. I'm finding that I have to turn up the gain to the + setting. At the - setting for many recordings I have to turn the amp volume up to max or near to it. (I have the player volume up full, with a normal volume setting.)

This is odd as other amps (Headroom, iBasso) haven't generally required this ( except sometimes for my ety4s ).

Is this unusual?

It is my understanding that the + gain switch is for harder to drive headphones. This seems odd.

Hi,
It seems that the + switch is better sounding even for 'not so hard to drive' headphones. So just leave it in the '+' position.

On the other hand, make sure you're not listening too loud.

I leave mine in the + position for my ESW10JPNs as well. It sounds good to me.
