Looking for a notebook, needs to be a as good as my sansa clip+ as a source. Other stuff is irrelavent. I couldn't care less about the other specs.

I doubt notebooks will have good quality sound it's just something manufacturers don't care about. If anything, you can use: notebook + external DAC/AMP --> headphones?

Don't worry about the sound quality and buy an extenal dac/amp instead, something like the fiio E10.

notebook or the like do not have sound quality. I'd get a DAC or a standalone media player as well. is it for home or outdoor use?

MacBook Air/Pro. Sounds the best from any other notebook through its headphone out.

Any notebook is going to have garbage built in sound on the motherboard. Just get what you need in a notebook or netbook and a small DAC.

The Asus Eee netbooks have a decent headphone out, doesn't hiss with my IEMs. One laptop to avoid would be the Macbook (the standard plastic ones)

Is there even such thing as notebooks with dedicated sound cards? As mentioned above, having no electronic hiss is about the best you can hope for. Any audiophile usb DAC should sound much better.

Why, do they put a decent HP out in the aluminum ones?
 
OK, Apple is pretty multimedia-focused, but a notebook HP out, is always a notebook HP out.

I have the plastic macbook, when used with IEMs there is a large amount of hiss and distortion in the lower frequencies.

Hmm and here I thought my W510 had poor audio, it has no hiss or noise, it's just very mid centric, dull and lifeless sounding.
Anyway, I'd recommend the Audiotrak Prodigy Cube to anyone wanting a portable USB DAC for their laptops.
