Noobie question

I have this plug.

3 is ground.

which one is right and which one is left?

It's a 3.5mm TRS connector.
The tip is left channel, the ring is the right channel, and the sleeve is ground. Use a multimeter to check which tab is connected to each section.

Yup, I always remember it because the bottom most part is connected to the case and that is ground. Ring and Right go together and all you have left is tip.

Sometimes I have to get my MM out so I can see what goes to what but that's the layout of the TRS plugs.

Yes that looks right. If you don't have a multimeter to check you can always go download a sound file that only plays in one ear, plug in that connector, and hold some bare wires between it and the plug on some earphones to check to make sure the sound is coming out in the correct channel (ghetto, but it works
