I'm about to tackle a diy project, I was looking over the schematics and noticed a lot of things like this:

So just to make sure: I can place the capacitor leads in any combination of holes as long as there is one on either side of the -||- symbol right (issues of polarity aside)?

indeed, so in the example you gave, that would mean no choice for the right lead, three choices (depending only on physical cap size and lead spacing) for the left lead (and no polarity if I see it correctly)
