This may sound like a stupid question, but I have to ask,

will upgrading my sound card..thinking of Asus Xonar D2 or Essence..improve the sound quality when converting lp to digital or is the quality of the card only realized in playback?

Recording is AD, converting Analogue to Digital
Playback is DA, converting Digital to Analogue
Most soundcards offer both, recording and playback.
Logically, the quality of the soundcard will both affect the quality of the recording and the playback
