Can i use XLR preouts on a headphone amp to run active speakers? So go from something like the XLR preouts on a Schiit Jotunheim to power a pair of Emotiva monitors?

Your not "powering" the studio monitors with the connection, your just sending a balanced line signal thru the XLR connection.
But yes, we on Head-fi do understand what you are trying to say.

Yep - that's what the pre outs are for.
