Okay so firstly whats the difference between the 1/4'' headphone plug and the mini one that you can plug into an ipod? I assume the larger one gives better quality(?). Also can only XLR connections be used for balanced cables (I did a quick wiki)? Finally, what cable are you supposed to use to connect your soundcard to your headphone amp?

There is no difference between the 1/8" plug and the 1/4" plug. The 1/4" plug was found more in pro equipment. Also the reason why xlr connectors are used for balanced is due to the fact that you need to have the positive and negative wires separate at the connector to the driver, The standard connector has the ground shared between both drivers and it is why cannot be used for balanced. I would suggest if you are coming straight out of your sound card to use the line out if available., it is usually a 1/8" connector, so a male 1/8" to male 1/8" terminated cable will be hhe one you need. Unless your amp uses something different for input?
