I want to buy either an older Nomad Jukebox 1/2/3 (looks like a PCDP) or an Archos Jukebox and put in a medium size HDD (160GB-ish) in it.

Question is, how big of a HDD (GB not dimensions

) can i fit in one of those, or where can I get that info?

I thought that only applied to the Nomad Jukebox Zen.

EDIT: Darn. That Nomad Juke-thingys apparently have a 1000 file limit!

So what about those Archos ones?

Wow, 1,000 songs?

That's even worse then I thought.

I think Rockbox has developed firmware for some of the old Archos Jukebox.

No, I'm pretty sure it's 10,000 if there is a limit, as I know I had much more than 1,000 songs on my Nomad Jukebox 2LX when I had it. Then it got stolen...

One thing I know about the Archos is that it requires a 9mm (or is it 9.5? Not the 12mm, i know that) drive. I don't know how much space it can address. I've got a 6gb one that I've wanted to replace the HD in for years, but I have a hard time coughing up $80 for a 40gig or bigger drive, when you can get whole players that are better than the Archos for just a little bit more money. I do highly suggest the Rockbox firmware for it though.

I have NJB3, and it can fit whatever size HDD. I've seen many 80gig conversions done, I'm also not aware of a file number limit, but 10,000 sounds familiar for some reason.

Also, you realise that these players use 2.5" HDDs, not a regular size HDD. The hard drives typically come out of laptops and I've never seen a 160gig before. The largest I've seen is 120gig and here (in Australia) they retail at about $250AUD.

Not 1000, my NJB3 has like 7000 songs.

EDIT: Visit Nomadness for all your Creative info.

There is no Rockbox for Creative players. But some people have been able to surpass the 10,000 file limit by shortening their tags.

I think I read somewhere that Archos Jukebox Recorder can only read up to 137gb, something to do with the hardware not the firmware though.

I'd go with the JB3 and find an infra red remote to go with it. Mine has over 5,000 tracks on it.

the amount of info in the tags makes a difference apparently, but with the latest firmware for the JB3, I'm pretty sure the file limit is 16,000 tracks. I encode at a pretty high rate, so I'm not affected by this limit.

You're definitely restricted to 2.5" discs - 100 or 120 GB max.
