These bookshelf speakers are producing no sound...

...they are connected to this subwoofer that's producing base...

...through 16 gauge speaker wires. I tripled checked the wires to make sure that they are connected from negative to negative and positive to positive and in the Speaker Output section of the subwoofer.

The subwoofer is connected directly to a PC.

Is there something I'm doing wrong or missing? This is frustrating and annoying not being able to use these speakers.

Lets start with the obvious: You didn't mention an amp or receiver.  Do you have one?

The amplifier in the sub is just to power the sub, it wont power your bookshelf speakers.

It all depends on how you want your setup to work, what you are connecting to, and what you want to achieve.  You need to evaluate what you need and do some research.

But short answer, yes, you will need some sort of amp or receiver to power your speakers and integrate your active sub...and it looks like in you case, connect to you PC.

this cheap enough? http://www.amazon.com/Lepai-LP-2020A-Tripath-Class-T-Amplifier/dp/B0049P6OTI/
actually i'm not sure if it's strong enough to power your speakers/sub

Cheap enough. You bring up a good point about it being able to power the speakers. Is there a way to figure that out besides trial and error?

Output increases when you give it a bit more power than the stock power supply

(very rough estimate)
the speakers are 8 ohms and have 87db sensitivity according to sony

7 watts per channel continuous at 8 ohms (0.1% thd +noise) - enter this into site

10 watts per channel continuos at 8 ohms (10% thd+ noise)

Sorry, this is just a bit confusing for me. With this power supply and the Lepai 2020A amp, it can power my speakers to a clean and audible volume? The speakers are about 15 feet away in a fairly small place.

The site says the peak spl should be around 85 db which is pretty loud. It wont make your ears bleed but it should be good at normal listening levels.
