what the heck is going on? first i hear nick drake's song mayfair in a commercial. can't remember what for exactly but i'm pretty sure it was a large company.

then today, i hear elliot smith's song "angeles" in a commercial for James Toyota Outlet.

?!?!?

Nick Drake's music was first used in a Volkswagen commercial, which no doubt gave him a fair bit of postmortem recognition.

Electronic music is also often used in commercials. Often I think it's pretty lame but sometimes it works. Amon Tobin has been used in at least one car commercial and I even heard Kid Spatula (aka µ-ziq) in a beer ad.

My favorite of all is the recent commercial for Manhunt on the Playstation 2. The music featured is from the Australian label Bloody Fist, a seriously underground hardcore-techno/gabber label with a sick and twisted sense of humor. Nothing like hearing 180BPM on a primetime commercial!
