Hello, I have heard that the audio quality on the nexus 7 is pretty terrible because of a poor DAC. Would getting an amp bypass the DAC or would it still sound like crap?

Just using an amp does not help with a poor DAC, although an external amp would most likelly be better than the built in amp.
You could get an amp with DAC (Leckerton UHA-4 for example) to bypass the built in DAC and do the DA conversion outside the Nexus 7. There are lists of which DAC's works with Nexus 7, google search is your friend. 
From what I've understood though, this requires you to root the nexus 7 and install a custom kernel for the nexus 7 to detect the DAC via the USB port as it is not detected out of the box.
