So the deal is, I own a pair of Grado SR60 and a pair of Sennheiser HD555.

For my metal needs, the SR60's does their job in a great way. I love them. I enjoy my HD555 for my other music (rock, electronica, jazz, everything else), paired with a Pro-Ject Headbox MkII. The phones have their share of awesomeness, but I'm not quite there yet.

What would be the next step for my non-metal needs? I'm not looking into getting a new amp, so phones like HD650 are not an option at this point. I'm also not looking for a higher end pair of Grado right nwo

I was thinking HD595, logically, but would they make a notable difference? Is there any difference in comfort btw?

I'm talking ~$200-$250 price class here.

I'd appreciate any input

You nixed higher-end Grados! Do you know how many people were likely itching to come in here and suggest RS-1s?

I never heard much difference between the 555 and 595s so I can't advise that as an upgrade path. What I'd do is jump straight to the 650s (yes, I read your post).

That Headbox isn't as bad as you make out, it'd handle the 650s okay and that leaves you with a top-notch pair of headphones and then the option to upgrade your source or amp. Otherwise you'll have a mid-range set of cans and it'd be more expensive long-term.

Id say get the Audio Technica AD900. They are great for almost everything (movies, games, and most types of music) and don't need an amp. They should be a much better headphone than the HD595 since even the AD700 beats it in my opinion.

Go for the 650's. J&R deal = $280. Can't beat it.

I just picked up a pair and they sound really good, even unamped/ RSA Tomahawk, I can't wait to hear these baby's sing with proper amplification.

650s are fine. They need an amp to shine, but you're still getting well over $300's worth even unamped imo. And you won't need to upgrade your non-metal headphones ever again ^^.

I have the HD600's and I think they are very good for Metal/Death Metal as those are my two main music genre's I listen too. They have great midrange and make the guitars and drums shine!

It's a tad more bassy, but unlike hd 600, hd 650 are not bottoming out on low bass on louder volume. (i'm not saying hd 600 tend to bottom out, but hd 650 handles deep loud bass better).
Also, i've found HD 650 to be more detailed and coherent across the sound spectrum.

650 were my plan too. For now I was just going to try to recable my 555s, but it just doesn't seem worth it when there doesnt seem to be a way to do it under $50 that would be worth it. I haven't had the 555s long so Im trying not to want an upgrade too soon. I don't know first hand but I have read a few times on here that 595 isn't worth the upgrade.

x2. The 555s and 595s almost sound identical. A recable on my hd600s gave a more worthy jump in enjoyment factor than the jump from 555 to 595
