If the RS 130 is constantly hissing, maybe you have not set it up correctly.

Firstly - The battery should be charged for 24-hours before first use.

Secondly - Connect the transmitter to a headphones socket and the volume should be set *loud*. Not so loud as to cause distortion in the transmitter, but louder than normal listening level.

Setting the level high to the transmitter, means that you are transmitting a good level and the transmitter is fully modulating.

Then, the volume on the headphones can be set much lower.

This minimises any transmission noise.

Low level to the transmitter + high level on the headphones =

High level to the transmitter + low level on the headphones =

Also, please be aware that about 3/4 of the price of any wireless headphones is in the wireless part - the transmitter and receiver.

Sennheiser *did* once make some superb cordless headphones where the whole transmission was digital and the DAC was in the headphones. Quality was superb as the headphones were the HD 580 - but the digital wireless version was x4 the price and people preferred to buy the wired headphones and spend the £600 they saved on a good headphones amp and still ahve money to spare - unfortunately.

Do you know what this model was called?
audio-technica seems to do the same with their latest, I think.

It was the IS 850 - It was based on the HD 580 headphones with an infra-red wireless system.

The audio was transmitted digitally - you could connect direct to the S-PDIF out of your CD player - the DAC was in the headphones themselves and was only converted to analogue a few cm from your ears.

Eeiiiww IR, I wonder if there's an RF (preferably 802.11a/n) equivalent nowadays....

But the distance doesn't matter so much as the quality/efficiency of the DAC + amp (if needed) right?
