Just recently got SFAM, but just heard Train of Thought...
Really good, but has a real old school metal sound-cant decide if I like it or if its a bit cheesy.
I hear a little Megadeath, some old Metallica riffs (in the metal/guitar solos)and all sorts of other late 80's type stuff.
Whats with James Hettfiled type voice "stretches" to the lyrics?
Then a violin or some piano comes from nowhere and equalizes the whole thing by providing some prog influences. Im not ripping em here, its just a bit unexpected...not sure how I feel about this album.
But this drummer (Portnoy?) is bananas!!
If you told me Neil Pert played in DT, I wouldnt question it.

EDIT

h please...tell me the guitar at the beginning to "Endless Sacrifice" doesnt sound like "Sanitarium"??

Thaddy, et al --

Yes, I made my decision today (thanks to your opinions, of course).
I bought I&W and M2: SFAM as a packaged deal at my local FYE...

All I have to say is... Freakin' incredible... The guitarwork is glorious...

Each one has it's heavy moments, but it isn't as hard as Awake, overall.
Awake is still my favorite, but I didn't expect these to be THIS good.

Great recommendations, people! I like them both quite a bit!

Yes, that is Mike Portnoy... A drummer with seemingly endless creativity...
It is funny that you mention Neil Peart in reference to Dream Theater...

Because Dream Theater and Rush equal about 90% of my listening as of late!

Hey there...Ive been trying to get into Train Of Thought-dont know if youve heard it yet, its my second DT album after Scenes form a memory.
Im a bit perterbed...TOT is ALOT heavier than what I was expecting, and it kind of bothers me that it sounds like alot of riffs and general style has been copied, specifically from Metallica and Pantera. Okay DT fans, dont get crazy on me here, im entitled to my own opinion.
Dont get me wrong, these guys are SUPER TALENTED, nod oubt about that; was wondering, is the majority of their material more metal or prog-rock? TOT im not really feeling (although "As I Am" is a wicked track).
SFAM is pure genius-where to go from here.
-Bangpod-been loving Rush as well these, only have "Moving Pictures", what do you suggest next?

Images and Words. SFAM / I&W swap places as my favorite DT album on a regular basis.

2112 is my second favorite behind Moving Pictures...
I also like Caress Of Steel and Fly By Night, as well.

The latter two are drastically different than the former two!

Happy listening,

Remarkable similarities b/w Geddy Lee and (whoever sings for DT-lol) and Portnoy and Pert!
Has DT done any Rush covers??
Bought 2112 (remastered) this afternoon...I love that old school 70's sound!
Im only 30 yrs old and I listen to ALOT of music-but lately ive been really into the classics. Been rotating Floyd, Zepellin and Rush non-stop.

wow.
cant wait to hear that stuff.
Im listening to 2112 and to me, its straight rock and not prog (other than overture).
If I love Moving Pictures, what other albums are similar...maybe a bit more synthy and experimental??
I hear good things Hemispheres....
