I did my search and chose an older Meridian 506.20, perhaps I should have paid a bit more and gotten the 508.24. Regardless the used "last season" idea will net you a good buy.

Speaking of older-but-golden players, did any one of you have any experience with the Sony SCD-X501ES? (SONY SCDX501ES CD/SACD PLAYER - available from Superfi UK Visit http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/product_id/4872 for details)
It seems to retail at around the same price as the Marantz SA7001 and the newer Onkyo C-S5VL. It plays SACDs too and has a rather small footprint.

I also chose the MARANTZ CD5001 over the newer CD5003 model. I hardly believe that the CD5003 performs any better sound wise, and I got very good price on it. the CD5003 have added features like mp3 and wma reading which I don't need anyway.
what Erik and others have said is probably true 99.9% of the times, but just be aware of the 0.1% possibility that a newer model can be an improvement over the old model. just check a little before you make your final decision.
