Hey All:

Over the years on other forums which I am a member of (e.g. Slickdeals) people have repeatedly deferred to this site saying it's THE place on the web if one has questions/issues/etc. with anything related to audio. So I come to you humbly with a question.

As a PC user that utilizes VoIP applications (e.g. Skype) at least 3-4 hours a day, finding a good, durable, comfortable headset with a clear mic is absolutely essential. Honestly, I am not a fan of the headphone style as I find it too obtrusive when in public and much prefer the earphone with inline mic design far more up my alley. For many years I used Logitech's H165 earphone style headset (http://support.logitech.com/en_us/product/notebook-headset-h165) and went through two pairs in four years, which for my use was fairly satisfactory. Unfortunately, it appears most manufacturers are uninterested in such designs and other than the Sennheiser PC 300 G4ME earphones I've yet to find a halfway decent earphone headset.

Smartphone headsets that use earphones and an inline mic, however, are quite common but they do not separate the microphone and headphone output making it difficult to use when plugging into a laptop. I did purchase a splitter (http://www.ebay.com/itm/4pole-3-5mm-3ring-Smartphone-iPhone-Earphone-Headphone-Splitter-Audio-converter-/121433753549?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c460407cd) but got mixed results. A pair of ultimate ears which I received as a gift (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Ultimate-Noise-Isolating-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B004YI3LGY) did not work as planned and my laptop's sound card could not detect anything from the inline mic. Conversely a random cheapo Polaroid headset (http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/polaroid-smartphone-headset-w/mic/ID=prod6226194-product) worked beautifully.

Can you explain this discrepancy? Based on looking at the two headsets the only conclusion I can arrive at is that think the splitter works ONLY when there are no controls in the inline mic (e.g. Play/Stop/Next Track, etc.). Beyond that I'm at a loss. In light of my experience can anyone either recommend:

  • A good PC earphone headset (e.g. one that has put a headset and microphone plug)
  • The proper smartphone headset such that it would work a traditional PC inputs when using a splitter.

Thanks so much!
