I never claimed that the D7000 is a bad headphone. In fact, I like it even though it's not as good as some other headphones technically.

Fair enough, I guess I misread your tone in the post, I just wouldn't want someone to dismiss them.

Who knows, maybe i'll ditch Denon after a headphone meet...but I doubt it lol.

Ah, nothing like a spot of AKG bashing to remind me that I am on Head-Fi

Might rip into town at lunch time and buy a new pair of K77s : just for laughs.

have you heard "serious top-end best headphones"?

and what AKG's have you listened to?

just trying to see where you're coming from.

Ive heard a few aside from the out of production R10, L3000, Orpheus (I wish), and the "new" Senn Edition 8.
have you?

I've heard these (on pretty good rigs)

AKG K1000 (maybe i didnt angle it right? I dunno impressive but still not my cup of tea for what i listen to), K701, K601

AT W5000, W1000, A900, AD900, AD1000, AD700
JVC/Philips HP-DX1000
Grado PS1000, GS1000i, RS1i, RS2
Ultrasone Edition 9
Sennheiser HD800, HD600, HD595, HD515
Beyerdynamic DT990, DT931, DT880, DT860, DT660
Stax SR007 Omega II, SRS-4040 II, SRS-3020
Denon D2000, D5000, D7000

D7000 makes my top 5 list (not including phones i havent heard yet).

Why does that offend many AKG owners? I like AKGs just not for everyday listening. i just have a bias against Audio Technica b/c theyve let me down many times (other than the W5000, which still lacked a proper bass response IMO).

For anyone else in PDX area frustrated by lack of places to audition better headphones, I found out Fred's Sound of Music (google) carries Sennheisers & Grados. Needless to say I'm planning on heading over there in the near future on a weekend. Stereotypes Audio in PDX (google) also is supposed to carry the Senns and the Grados. Haven't been able to find anyone carrying Denons.

If someone knows where I can go to hear Denon phones in/around PDX/Vancouverplease let me know.

my question was directed at RushFan, not you.
and yes, I've listened to most of those headphones you listed.

well, i agree with him. and it sounded like you were calling him an idiot for thinking the d7000 belongs with some of the best.

im just sayin.. we all have different tastes and opinions. thats all.

i dunno if you're familiar with his posting/forum history, but he only recently got d2000's and those are the only or first "serious" headphones he's ever owned. so i'm just curious what other headphones he's heard when he makes the claim that d7000's are "serious top-end best" or if he's just going from reading other's reviews and impressions.

yeah Senns are really nice for acoustic, I really enjoyed Eric Clapton on my 580s - you are going to need a good tube amp for them however which will cost double the can.

Well I listen to much more than acoustic, I need good DVD & BluRay performance and they need to sound good with hard rock too. The AD700s are very muddy when given any kind of complicated bass, like a battle scene or fast hard rock.

¿Que?

If anything, the low bass coming out of the D2000 gets a bit overwhelming at times, at least to my ears, and the midbass doesn't seem even slightly accentuated. Headroom's Wolfgang seems to agree:
