Currently, Sony will support only Windows XP/2000/Me/98SE with their NetMD software. Thus, if you're using a Mac, you'll have to find another player.

If you're using a Mac, I think iPod makes the most sense, especially if you're not going to run/jog with the unit.

Agree. Besides other manufactures seemingly fleeing Mac support (Camdridge/Creative, etc.) as the iPod takes over (like Safari situation unfortunately), the iPod has a few other advantages when used with the Mac.
