Maybe get the Zero and the D1001. You'll be able to get them new and still be able to keep it under $400.

Less than 400 clams. Hmmmm....if you are a rocker, try Grado 225's for around 200. Or blow it all on a pair of Sennheirser 650's or AKG 701.

Maybe you need 2 sets of cans. Get Grado SR-60 (nice for the price at 70 bucks) and then spend the rest on a pair of Denon 2000 or AKG 271s (look for the old model) or Sennheiser 600.

Good luck!

PS. I just remembered you are in the UK. Skip Grado. Too dear except in US and maybe Canada. I like the AkG 271s's and I bet the 272's are great. The AKG 271s is fantastic--great balance, killer mids, decent highs, lean but accuratre bass, and they are closed--use/get velour ear pads. I really like my pair.

Far below $400, as it would total about $200 if he got a good price on the zero (saw one for $130 a while ago here on fs forum). Definitely go for d2000 over d1001.

unfortunatly the d2000 on its own costs $400 here, i dont mind paying for they are going to be worth it, an AKG 272 costs $200 here. how would these two compare with each other?

Also, please remember that if you're trying to hit a price point, you always get more going used. The FS (for sale) forums on here and stupendous, and in the week or so you would have to wait for the gear you want to come up for sale, you could get the required number of posts (along with some good experience)

sairafi,

I've not heard the 2000's, but I do like my AKG 271s which is now the 272. The AKGs have become my second favourite set of cans (my top choice is a rather different sounding can, the Grado 325i). I probably listen to the AKG 271s the most as I like the way they sound--really accurate, great mids, lean but accurate bass, decent highs. They sound better with velour ear cushions (better bass) and are also more comfortable. I think that for 200 bucks you can't go wrong with the AKG 272. If you are into thumping bass avoid them. If you like jazz, classical, pop, folk, rock, country--they are very good. If you are into bass heavy stuff, maybe you would want to look elsewhere.

If my Sennheiser HD-595's disappeared, I'd not replace them.
If my Koss Pro 4AA disappeaered, I'd rejoice (got 'em 35 years ago and just can't part with them).
If my AKG 271s disappeared, I'd look for a nos pair of AKG 271s or buy a pair of the 272's.
If any of my Grados disappeared, I'd replace them (although I might move up the Grado food chain to the RS-2's or RS-1's).

The AKG 271s do benefit from a headphone amp.

So maybe the 272's and a headphone amp?

Cheers!
