I liked the RA-1 a lot for my Grados so I would seriously consider that if you're going solid state, for tube amps I would suggest something from Little Dot, especially the I+ which is specifically designed for low impedance headphones, gets good reviews here on head-fi and has great tube rolling options to boot.

You should be careful with IEMs and desktop amps, IEMs are very sensitive... and you will probably pick-up noise that you wouldn't otherwise, most desktop amps are less than ideal for IEMs, and you don't want to go blow them up just yet I guess.

gilmore lite is not analytical in nature, it doesn't really have a sound signature aside from slight lack of warmth which comes back when you upgrade the power supply.

Also the Ck2III from AMB labs (same ppl who came out with M^3) works very well. it is also DIY but can be had assembled from builders suggested on the AMB website for around 400. Works with anything I've thrown at it.

An used Mapletree Ear + Purist would be my 1st choice. I have seen them for $425 in the for sale forum, not often but they do show up.

Another choice would be an used X-Can V2 or V3 w/ the PinkFloyd mods. Currently there is on for sale by cardude.
