Howdy. I'm new here. I currently have a set of Sennheiser Hd 202's and I've gotten the upgrade bug. I listen to metal, hardcore, punk, metalcore, deathcore grind and other forms of extreme metal. Can anyone recommend me a new set of phones with focus on clarity, detail, and decent but not overpowering bass? Oh and I also currently have the Koss Ksc-75's so I've had a taste of what clarity is like. I'm mostly looking for closed circumnaural types. Thanks all.

What is your budget for the clarity you're looking for?

What sound card or device will you be plugging your new headphones into?

Do you prefer headphones that are good at blocking external sounds or not leaking sound out so as to not bother others near by?

Budget 30 to 80 dollars(poor college student). Mostly going between an unamped sansa fuze and a Harmon Kardon Hk3480 stereo receiver. I'm not aiming for anything high end(yet). But just looking for a little better. And yes I would love to not have leaking sound. In or out. But still have somewhat of a soundstage that is spacious. If that is even possible at this price point. Thanks much. But definitely willing to bend a little if needed. Not too much though.

If you could bump it to around 100 (when they're on sale), you could go for a pair of the AT ES7's. Very grado/ksc-75 sounding and I think they would be really great for the genres you listen to.

Plus, they're very attractive!

Try a pair of Denon AH-D1001's used from the forums here, maybe a Grado SR 60 or get a pair of Sennheiser 201's for $20 and buy a PA2V2 portable headphone amp (or even the new Fiio E5 amp for $21.50) - some relatively inexpensive and nice SQ combinations .

Thanks for the replies guys. Got a little extra Christmas money so can got a little crazy. Charliex how does that fiio and hd201 combo sound. Been reading mixed opinions on the Hd201s all over the place. Much appreciated.

If you are looking for closed circumnaural, the ES7 is probably your best choice if you stretch your budget. But for clarity and not so overpowering bass the open backs will be a way better choice. If portability and isolation is not important for you do consider the SR60 instead, or stretch your budget and get the SR80. The Grados are the king when it comes to most types of extreme metal.

Another quick question. I've looked at the Denon d1001's but I find several that have letters at the end of them. S and K and such. I was wondering which is best.

I would go with those and replace the stock pads with bowls, or just buy the SR-80 (comes with bowls).
