Im wondering if I need an amp to power my headphones.

Im not interested in having the music any louder than my Kindle provides, I just want to know if an amp would make the sound quality any better.

Im using a Kindle Fire as a source, and Sony MDR-XB700 headphones.

This is the amp built into the Kindle:

The impedance on the headphones is 24ohms.
The stock amp specs say:
Stereo 1.29-W Class-D BTL 8-Ω Speaker Driver With Direct Battery Connection.
Does the 8ohms mean that the headphones have too much resistance to be powered my my kindle?

Also what amp would you suggest? I was looking at the Fiio e6

Sorry if my question is messy but Im new and have a lot of questions.

Without bypassing the internal KF amp, the best you'd get is a volume increase or additional power for a high-impedance set of cans (XB700 are fine plugging straight into the KF). However, with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) coming up, we'll be able to use external DACs and amps :) Not sure of what the status on the KF's Jelly Bean update is, but hey, there's always rooting!

Oh crumbs :frowning2: I <3 my Android gear, but it's such a shame that the only good Android devices for music listening are the GS series (Wolfson chip). PLEASE Google, GIVE US AMP AND DAC SUPPORT!

Wes, I think they are adding DAC support to the devices coming out in the near future...just wait. It would be nice to have with my kindle fire.

No it does not have a line out. You can watch xda forums if you want, but I will watch it myself and post wen it becomes available.

It's supposed to be native in Jelly Bean, but it's finicky at best (no firsthand experience, but most users have discovered only a few DACs to work).

Well I've found that the built in audio sounds pretty good, but my computer still produces much better quality. I'm really wanting the new kindle with dolby. It also has HDMI. I'm wondering if it is possible to use a DAC through the HDMI?
