You have to factor in the cringe factor of potential customers once they hear there is a coupling cap in the design

Let me ask this another way. How many of NP's "free designs" in the source/preamp/crossover category use coupling capacitors and how many of his commercial designs in this same category use coupling capacitors?

This is significant in that the D1 stage has been highly regarded as one of the best DAC analog stage to use for over 15 years.  There have been a lot of complex ideas floating around in the DIY community the past decade but none I have found sound as good as the D1.

Which is exactly why I still have my original D1 (with 24/96 upgrade), and have felt no pressing need to DIY it.

I like both versions, just different. The 24/96 seems a bit better resolution, a tad more air, but not as ballsy in the low end as the '63 version.

don't underestimate the fail factor of potential DIYers.

I'm thinking it may be an alternative to passive I/V for a tube DAC.   It looks like the distortion decreases exponetially with gain,  so if you set it up for a low gain and then add an anode follower it could be an altenative to the Audionot method of I/V transformers and passive I/ve keeping a lower compliance voltage on the output of the DAC.
