Basically the new V ipods are the same ipods as before with a better video screen. This screen has been released for awhile now, and I have it on a older 5th Ipod I recently returned to Apple for a new Ipod because of a warranty issue. The increase in video playback time is due to this and search software is just added when it is send out. So basically besides the search software which I believe will come out in a firmware update down the road there really isn't a difference besides the size of the ipods and the prices.

This in my eyes is a hold over until Jan. When Apple can come out with a touch screen V ipod but that has been having bugs and still in the works.

Yes, the LCD is updated, as well as maybe a more efficient LCD and hard drive have been implemented.

The whole 32-and-64 MB of RAM deal I think still stands, depending on what model you get.

THe search function will be added in another firmware down the road.

I have read in ilounge minutes ago, that 5gen ipods with 1.2 firmware on it play 640x480 videos.

Hmmm... I thought they actually increased the resolution of the screen to 640x480.

how does a brighter screen and a firmware update allow such a large increase in the video battery life? the old ipods were rated at 2 and 3 hours for video. the new are rated at 3.5 and 6.5

Well the brightness of the screen is now user controlled. The firmware update probably optimizes the battery usage.

if they doubled the video battery life, there must have been a very significant flaw in the first generation or there is something different inside. you cannot make those kinds of gains by just tweaking things.

They're probably using a more efficient video decoder.

Anyone actually get this new ipod?

I hope I can put Rockbox on this new ipod.

Personally, I'm not convinced that there is any difference between the new and old 5G iPods besides software (and a hard drive in the 80gb).

Every new feature could have been implemented through updated software, including the 'brigher' LCD, which I feel was just allowed to be brigher than before since there was only one brightness setting before and now its variable.

Since the extended battery life only applies to videos, it shows its the same battery inside, and either a new h.264 decoding chip or just new decoding routines through software have been implemented. I guess they left the search feature out so the new iPods had some unique characteristic. I'm sure it will be included in future updates... after the 6G is released.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the first person to crack one open and list the chips inside to see if there really is any difference.
