new Valhalla

You don't want 2 volume controls involved. Do you have a line-level preamp output? That would be a fixed ( not variable) output and that's what u want going into your headphone amp.

Exactly, that was what I was thinking when I read post one. The Valhala has only one input so best to have a single source going to it.

my NFB 10ES2 had a line level option, high and low, I used the low output setting when I had the Schiit Vali and it helped with the noise out of my W1000x

Well I just got permission from my wife to order a Sennheiser HD650. I can't handle steps anymore (battling cancer) so we are moving out of our 2 story house into an apartment. Thus I'll be using more headphones and less speakers. Guess I can't be playing my McIntosh speakers at concert hall levels in an apartment. The good news is the new apartment is quite spacious with a very large living room.

Man, sorry about your illness, best wishes to you. You have made a great choice with the hd650's, and the Valhalla is ideal/fantastic with them.
Tell us later how you like them compared to your hd280's. I bet u will be very happy.

Thanks for the well wishes. I listen to mostly classical and jazz with some classic rock (my formative years) mixed in. From all the reading I've done on this site and others I think I made a good choice. I gave the 280's back to my son after I bought a pair of HD360 pro. They were only $50 with free shipping from Amazon. They broke in nicely and sound decent...especially for the $. They are a good bit smaller than the 280's but fit me fine. If you have large ears forget the 360's. I'll give my opinion on the 650's once I run them through their paces.
