New UM2's, my thoughts...

I've recived the ultra soft flex sleeves today. My first impression was that I hated them, but that was only because I didn't get a good seal. When I have a good seal they provide a more balanced sound, the vocals are different, they don't have the same warmth that the biflanges provide. They give more treble and the bass has doesn't change.

I really don't know which one to prefer ,it's all about the vocals, there's the biggest difference. Some songs really need the warmth in the vocals to shine, but on the otherhand the flex sleevs is more balanced and give me a bigger soundstage.

congrats about getting um2 , they're i n c r e d i b l e ( and tweakable ) canal for the price - give them a bit of time , as they burn in they'll set on their sound then you'll love them for the balance they have

I've had some time with these now, and after putting 100+ hours on them I can say they sound great. The treble really came out, and now I can hear a lot more details. Dare I say these almost have too much bass?

I'm glad I didn't send them back right away, they are currently jamming out Tiestos' Parade of The Athletes and it's sending chills down my spine. Very happy.

I've noticed that my UM2s don't provide the sound I want with a 3g iPod -- though this is after only about 60 hours of use. Specifically, the iPod presets either sound too gratng (treble boost) or too veiled (jazz, Latin).

It's not a fault of the UM2s. When I listened via my Xenos 3HA headphone amp, the sound was suddenly clear and bright, though so much seems to depend on the quality of the recording.

It would be wonderful if Apple incorporated even one custom preset into their iPods, if only to bring out the best in these IEMs.

you can create a custom preset in itunes. when you next sync your ipod, it will save it as a new eq setting. then you get

So I got the UM-2 (primarily for stage use, I'm guitar+vocals) and was at first horrified by the sound. Then they burnt in and I was pleased, but not thrilled. They sounded a bit muffled and when I tried different tips, they sounded either too veiled, with ample bass but no presence, or too trebly and still strangely distant. Now that my custom sleeves have arrived, they sound incredible. The difference is enormous. It feels a bit strange, (but not uncomfortable per say) but the sound is fabulous. The bass is exactly where it should be (I'm used to Sennheiser HD-600's mostly, and a whole array of speakers as well) and the mids and treble are fully present. The soundstage isn't mindbending, but it isn't disturbingly cramped either. The detail is wonderful, and the whole sound feels flat and neutral. They don't have a some unique really musical character, but feel like they are perfect for reference, to hear a proper unaltered signal, which is exactly what I need them for. They sound alot like my hd-600's, which are more expensive, and much bigger. I am very pleased, and can't stress enough the difference that the custom sleeves made.
