New to high end headphones - 515 vs 280

A good alternative might be the AKG240s which can be a lot of fun and has very nice mids and good detail. Their one drawback though is that they've got quite the upper-bass low-mids hump. Some things will sound a bit think particularly compared to the HD555. On the other hand, some things will sound sooo sweet.

I've hear the 240's break apart easily... Can anyone comment?

I've got a pair of 240Ms that are over ten years old...
Nothing at all broken yet, even the pads are in impeccable condition.
