Is there much gain to be had from going from my current unit gen 3 to the gen5 version ? if I use the simple line out (my rig example below)

 
I'm also still confused about the iMod for both these units also....

So I was laid up yesterday so i pulled out the iPad and went ebay shopping and managed to get the following:
 
5th gen iPod (30gb)
replacement battery iPod 5 gen
replacement battery iPod 3 gen
CF/50 pin adapter for iPod 3 gen
32 Gb CF card
CF/zif adapter iPod 5 gen
SD/CF adapter
 
looking for some Black Gate capacitor however due their polarity and that they are EOL prices arn't cheap. Does anyone have any experience with either of the following alternatives ?

Ipod 5gen arrived yesterday and have been playing around with it today @ work.
 
TBH - to my ears without doing the imod yet and simply using the rockbox with LOD into FiiO E12 and Alessandro MS-1 (old version) the gen 3 ipod seems to have a more robust sound to it than the gen 5 (using the same file) ......
 
Does this mean that the same sound characteristic's would carry over after the imod ?? if so then my ears are all for the 3rd gen over the 5th gen although TBH I will prob mod both of them and give one to my GF

So eBay is my new friend and I have managed to find all the parts to build a new iPod video from scratch almost and they will be arriving in the next few weeks.

Looking forward to this project.

Also does anyone have the wiring diagrams or clear photos for the gen 3 iPod ?

Just curious, how much did it cost for all the parts? Sounds like a very fun project.  Well, everything but the software.
