Whatever you decide on, check out Audiogon AudiogoN high end audio auctions, classifieds, hifi chat and you might be able to pick whatever you want up a bit cheaper (used) or get a slightly better model for your budget.

For Prog Rock and Metal I would suggest auditioning a pair of Focal JM Labs 705V and Totem Dreamcatchers. Both are excellent speakers for your musical tastes.

The Focals would be about $50 over your budget new, but both the Focals and Totems can be found on Audiogon for under budget. Also, you might want to consider stands. Whether you make them or purchase them make sure that they have a heavy solid base. The top plate need not be the same size as the speaker, but I wouldn't extend out more than a few inches as stability is at question.
