I bought my first non portable CD player in almost ten years today. I walked in to a local shop and left with a Rotel RCD-1072 and set of interconnects.

My Denon player died around '96. Since then, I've spun discs on a RioVolt, Rockford Fosgate deck, crappy combo DVD/CD unit, and even crappier boombox. I've been listening to mostly mp3/AAC files the past three years.

I did all my auditioning on their Grado 125s (same as mine). When I was satisfied with the combo (an hour later) and knew I was spending money, I asked to try the Grado 225s. I gave them a ten minute test, but didn't like them. Not nearly long enough, but I was starving and ready to leave. Then they offered a good price on RS-2s ($350). I was tempted, but never put them on.

Initial conclusions:
Nice to hear *all* the detail of music.
Nice to *not* hear the occasional artifacts of mp3s.
Music has some depth again (within the limits of my Grados). I want more.
Some of my CDs sound a bit like gargage because that is what was recorded.
I wish I could get width like in a speaker system.
The supplied remote isn't as bad as some reviews point out.

I'm curious to try a headphone upgrade/change. The Grados are leaps and bounds better than my MDR-V6s. I haven't tried my Etys yet. I'd like to try a new can again, perhaps a Sen.
