New router, annoying buzz...

Hey!

So finally after being stuck with 1/1mbit ADSL and paying 33,90€/month (that's right) I finally got my 10/10mbit fiber connection today and couldn't be happier, everything is working perfectly, getting good speeds and the router even has wlan with seperate on/off button which is terrific since I mainly use wired connection because I use a desktop, no extra brain tumors for me!

However... the router, Inteno x5671a has a high pitched buzz/hum and even if it's not loud at all I can hear it and it's annoying as hell.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of this high pitched noise by using some kind of dampening or sound absorber without overheating the router?
I know the obvious solution is to move the router further away or into another room alltogether but I have a small apartment and as I said I'm using a wired connection so I don't want any more cables lying around...

is it the router or its power supply making the noise?

power supply would be my guess. I have that issue with my Jabra bluetooth headset charger.

The noise is indeed coming from the router, not the power supply.

if it is new return it as defective....if not i prefer to use a big hammer!!!!

The 2nd power supply on the router itself is most likely to blame. What you are experiencing is coil whine from the inductor(s). Cheap and/or faulty board components would be my guess if it's a brand new unit.

First, take it back if you can. If not, you could have someone replace the electrolytic capacitors. Bad caps can cause the coils to whine like that. An alternate and additional solution would be to provide extra dampening to the coil(s) by encasing them in either nail polish or hot glue.

However, at this point you might opt for the large hammer tjohnusa suggested!

yeah. Take it back. Failing that, find the inductors on the board and bury them in hot glue, RTV, epoxy, whatever.
