This band has some great albums that I can barely listen to due to overcompression. Does anyone know if the vinyls are more palatable?

It really depends on your setup. If your cartridge and table are really revealing/accurate, then your gains will be only moderate. However, if you are using a warm cartridge (Grado comes to mind) then much of the digititis will be lost in the bloom.
