New phone on the block - Philips HP890

Aug 16, 2001 at 11:08 PM Post #31 of 76
Actually, both 890 and 910 are open designs with metal grille and with mylar dome drivers, newly developed by Philips. This is what the UK website says about the 890s: "Innovative CLARITY speakers are the essence of this headphone. Developed in the renowned Philips laboratories, CLARITY speakers combine powerful bass performance with crispness of detail."
And Sony use their bio-cellulose membrane drivers in the closed CD 1700s, don't they?

eeyssjr: Actually, I think Tomcat is right here - I don't believe, this could be a "Sony in disguise", either. For example, the K501 also features 50-mm-drivers and 3 m cable length - is this a disguised Sony, too? I think not. No offence meant, though.

Tomcat: I'm confused, too.

But in fact I think that Philips found the futuristic design of the HP910 not so good, either. So the more conservatively styled HP890 might be the top-liner in disguise - even if it's listed 80 DM cheaper than the HP910. Btw, you might have noticed my statement, that the highs of the HP890 seem just a tad to bright and shrill for me. But I don't know, if the HP910 are even worse. Maybe they are - because of the added 2 kHz... Well, as I'm going to phone up their press spokesman, anyway, I could just ask him, what they regard as their top-of-the-line product themselves. And maybe he also knows, if and when the HP890 is going to be introduced in the US - in order to unscrew KR...

jerikl: Absolutely right - even if I take it as a compliment, that my review has aroused some interest.

But as I gave it back to our new editor trainee for his mp3-player tests, today, I'm already curious what he thinks about the HP890. I'll add his statements, if there are interesting additions or deviations to/of my opinion. At least, I already saw him wearing and obviously enjoying it, though that's all I can tell, yet.

all: I'd like to collect some feedback. Do you think, I have included all of the important info, or did you miss anything I should pay attention to next time? I better not ask about the style, though, because I find my English a little clumsy myself.

And what do you think about my concentration on testing not too expensive headphones that look promising to me? Is that useful for the community?

Greetings from Munich!

Manfred / lini

P.S.: Just for your interest, I phoned with Mister Schmitt at Ultrasone, today, and gave him some feedback about the HFI-2000, which I didn't like that much. He seemed very interested - especially when I compared it to the HP890, K501 and DT531 (he owns the latter himself and also finds the mid-bass a little too dominant...).

So even if Ultrasone might have disappointed me with the HFI-2000 (especially for 459 DM list price), they apparently want to make things better. I also encouraged him to get the K501 and the HP890 to check for himself, so they could see, feel and hear what I mean for themselves. So maybe they can and will evolve the HFI-2000 to a serious contender sooner or later.

I just wish all companies would react to feedback like this, even if it's negative feedback - though I think Mister Schmitt noticed that it was meant as constructive criticism. Nevertheless I have a little bad conscience, now - because when he asked me, what part of Ultrasone would fit in my personal "ideal blend", the only good thing from the HFI-2000 was detailed presentation in low volumes, though it's my true opinion.

lini, I have to say I enjoy every single posting you write.
Your reviews (as all other postings) seem to be honest and accurate and are always helpful.

Keep up the good work, man!

Oh OK. This is the kind of answer i want!

If the philips has mylar drivers then i rest my case. This is definitley not a sony in diguise. No offense taken lini. This is what this forum is all about.

I didn't have this kind of information to hand, so just had a strong suspicion from the appearance only. They do look very attractive though. The kind of headphone you would buy for looks alone.

Hey guys, I'm new to this site and in the market for some new headphones. These phones really caught my eye and I'm wondering if anyone has anymore information on them. I tried doing a search on the usually reliable google to no avail. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

Wow.

That's a very classy looking phone....I've always been rather attracted to Philips product designs, but this takes the cake.

Can it possibly be < $100? We could possibly have a new best sub-$100 headphone, if not best looking by far.

Yes, ok.. They look SECKSI. btw, my K401s have gobs of impact.. Are the K501s more laid back or what?

I'm suprised lini says they sound good. All the phillips phones I've heard sucked hard... Can you say treble?

In the meantime, I have listened to both the HP 910 and HP 890. lini is right about the HP 890. They seem quite dynamic with a very nice soundstage and lots of bass extension. They are somewhat bright and probably fatiguing in the long run, though. But they are far better than the HP 910, which are simply piercingly and painfully bright and, to me, unlistenable.

In hifichoice, www.hifichoice.co.uk, they actually complained that the treble was weak on the Philips Hd910. That was one of the reasons they gave these headphones three stars for sound quality. I'm considering buying a pair of Hd890 for using as reference or monitor headphones since I've understood that they are very neutral headphones, even the 910 are considerd neutral in reviews I've read. Is there anyone else out there who has an opinion about the differeces between the 890's and 910's? Because this is actually the first time I've heard someone say the 910's are to bright!

Would Grado GR80's perhaps be better as reference/monitor headphones? They seem to perform a bit weak below 100 Hz in reviews I've read... Something to avoid if your want a neutral sound but something that could improve clairity, or?

Which brings us to my question:

I'll be buying my next cans from Bluemarx in Sweden (too damn expensive here in Denmark), and I was pretty much set on the HD-495s. Now I read this thread and I see that the SBC-HP910 cost the same as the Senns and the SBC-HP890 costs around $10 less. Should I be tempted by these almost unknown Phillips headphones or should I stay with my first choice - the Sennheiser HD-495?

I listen to a large variety of music (classic, rock, jazz, etc...)

If they cost the same I would definatelly pick the Philips HP890 over the Senn HD495. They have better build-quality, better detail, better bass, better comfort. They're simply not in the same class.
I'm considering upgrading from the Senn HD495 to the Philips HD890 myself.
