i have been using jriver for a long time. including the latest version. it has always been on a buffer of 50ms(recommended). yesterday it started skipping like crazy. i knew exactly exactly what the issue was just from experience. raised it to 100ms fine. i suppose it doe snot matter since i am not using this rig for recording. however i am baffled as to why the change with no other changes taking place.of course i understand anything can go wrong with windows. just wondering if anyone knows what could have caused this all the sudden.

I was also wondering if given this i am better off to use a soiundcard with dsp onboard than the motherboards optical output.  it should not matter other than speed because i am going into a bit perfect dac via a fully isolated usb connection outside of the computer. i suppose this really only matters if you are recording. a soundcard should not provide better sound than the motherboard once the usb is isolated and re clocked. just don't know why this just occurred after years of usage. just raised to 100ms and fine. would not worry about it but wonder if anything else could be going on affecting audio quality. don't hear anything though.

if anyone has any idea how i can get it back to 50ms that would be good. i am using a custom asio driver so it may be difficult whatever went wrong. actually come to think of it this did occur shortly after a bsod. so i hope nothing more important went wrong. i started having issues with the remote too. going into theater view with any button. perhaps just time to reinstall jriver but i am not sure how to do a clean install. registry etc must be full of entries.

The latest version is probably using more resources thus the need for a longer buffer. I use a long buffer in Foobar2000 in order to avoid skips and don't really worry about it. What is your concern with having to adjust the buffer 50 more milliseconds?

thanks. nothing really. like i said it only matters if one is recording. which of course they probably would not be doing with jriver anyways

i was wondering about using a soundcard instead of the motherboard but than duh, it is usb. i must have gotten a case of the stupids today. my usb is completely isolated from the computer both electrically and mechanically plus the dac regenerates the clock. can't do more than that. problem solved i suppose i guess. that makes sense it is using more resources. it is a full media server not just an audio playback engine and it keeps getting more robust. strange though it worked at first unless there was an up date i did not catch. it is on auto update stable of course. i figure dual e5 xeons can handle the task lol. seriously though i did that to underclock them and not have any fans. underclock an i7 that much would be too slow. at least it is dead quiet in here. i guess thats it. fixed!
