I will get one of the new video ipods for Christmas primarily for audio use but will use it for video too. I have Mac ibook and power books. Need a line out for amp use. what is the smart accessory package to get? what is the case to get. Do the SIK travel docks work with the new unit? Will my old iPod dock work with it? Will the wall charger of the older iPod work? If you are experienced with the new model, please help me out.

The case breaks down into two categories: Skins and Cases.

-Skins
Skins are very thin, clear cover for your iPod, so they don't get scratched.
Pros: No added bulk, beautiful look, same great feel, full capablities
Cons: Cumbersome instalation to say the least, won't protect against dropping(even though Apple generally will trade out your iPod for anything.
Choices: Invisible Shield or Power Support Clear Film

Shield: Plastic made from "helicopter blade" material. Its quite hard to install nicely but it does provide a great cover. One is a bit steep at $25 especially sicne you can't take them off.

Film: Elecrostatic plated side so it "clings" to the iPod. Relaitvetly cheap at $15 for two. Unfortunately for some, doens't cover sides. Yet, it makes for much easier installation. IMHO, get this, I just purchased mine.

-Cases
Ranging from clear neoprene to versachi leather to maple wood.
Pros: Protective (u still need to be cautious though) and in some cases trendy.
Cons: Added bulk, reduced control, usually hideous, and always expensive.

From the adjective I have concocted of Cases, you can see I don't support them and if you are interested you should ask someone else for recommendations.

Now:
Sik Dins:
Any assecory that utilizes a "Dock Connector" will work with the new iPod. The only feature that will be disabled on any previous accesories is Firewire transfer to the computer. So, a Sik Din USB would probably be the best choice, even though the firewire Sik Din WILL still work!

Dock:
Yes, once again anything with a "Dock Connector" will work. Now, the new thin design may not be a bit small for the slot, but I haven't found that to be a problem unless you are travelling with it.

Charger:
Yes. The Firewire port of the old chargers still charge the iPod, but unfortnately they no longer can send data over those connections. So, old chargers, firewire cables connecting to computer, will all work!

Now, special accesory to buy:

If you are looking for a line-out, may I suggest Turbo's dock. It only provides for a audio line out, however, it is the most high fidelity option and for most of us the lack of USB connection is not important. The best part about Turbo's dock is the locking feature. If you connect a cable to your iPod, you will notice that it locks and you must squeeze the sides to release it. However, if you place your iPod on a dock, there is no release, merely a yank. That is because the cables are locking. It is very important to get a locking dock since otherwise they will fall off or ruin your dock port while they are sitting in your pocket. Turb is the ONLY DOCK with locking function at this point. Unfortunately it does not come in black.

If you wish to maintain a connection I suggest the Pocket Dock USB as it is smaller and comes with free cables.

As far as packages go that depends on your needs. I haven't heard of any line out plus case packages. The most I find is multiple cases or car connection kits. My suggestion is just to by seperately as usually the items in such packages are of poorer quality or if not, they are overly expensive since you don't need everything within. I hope this has helped.

Actually, the SiK line-out adapters also lock (at least my ram din does).

Hey, do you know if you have to wet that film from Power Support to apply like the Invis-Shield? Or just put it on? it doesn't say anything about it in the instructions on the site, so I'm guessing not, and said air bubbles are easily removed... Hmm.
