New improved Senn PX100
Mar 9, 2006 at 5:24 PM Post #16 of 28
BTW, the difference between the old and new PX100s are the voice coils - AlCu on the newer ones vs. heavier Cu on the old ones. AlCu voice coils first appeared in the late '80s (HD530, the first 300 ohm model), plain copper voice coils have been moved down-market since then. (HD520 + -II, HD525 + HD455, HD500, nowadays only HD435 and lower.)

So, were there any Sennheiser press releases or any official sources to confirm this change to the PX100? I just got my PX100's Saturday. I'm assuming (which I hate to do) that I have the newer version?? I don't have any other PX100s to compare, but curiousity has gotten the best of me. I searched the Senn. website for press releases from now, back to last year and didn't find anything. Any ideas when the newer versions would've come out? BTW, I'm satisfied with my PX100's thus far. Maybe a very little underwhelmed just b/c they're SO praised/hyped in the forums. Still, I'm sure that my opinion will change soon b/c they're currently burning in and I have to admit that I love the analytical Senn-sound (aka-the dark side) of my HD280pros. IMO, you hear music the way the producer/engineer intended it to be heard. O.K., back to the topic--- Any opinions on what specific changes occur with PX 100 burn in?

You do not know the power of the dark side

O.K., I couldn't take it any longer, so I went to the source. I emailed Sennheiser's Customer Service to ask if any changes at all have ever been made to the PX100 since it's inception. Here's the reply I received:

"Hello -

Thank you for your inquiry and interest in Sennheiser. The PX100 has been unchanged since its conception. Thanks!

If you need additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I don't know if I should be happy or dissapointed, but I found the answer.

Funny. When there was a similar thread a while back and someone asked, Sennheiser support admitted that there had been a change in voice coils (Cu -> lighter AlCu) sometime in 2004.

Although this may be the Senn party line, I have both an old pair and a new pair, and they sound, to my ears, markedly different. There is, of course, no way to tell (that I can see) that they are different, but they do sound different to me. I always hated the px100, finding it too boomy in bass and dark, but the new one is tighter in the bass with much more significant high end. Maybe I am confused somehow, but I can tell which is which just by listening...so...

It's strange, because I would think that they would have no reason to lie on this...maybe it is that the early pairs had bad quality control, and so many of us that bought them when they came out got dark ones. Hmm...

If anyone has an older pair they could show us, perhaps theres a visible difference, although id doubt it.

Too hard to see in this pic, but I think think your driver looks lighter, but maybe that's just the light.

Sennheiser actually answers sort of like that every time i ask them a question on something like that: according to them the HD650 will be their flagship headphone till the end of time.
There is a difference.

Seconded. The difference is clearly audible - 'old' sound is darker and bassier with recessed mids, the 'new' is more neutral and enjoyable to my ears. Very enjoyable with a decent portable!

No joke. It is an actual email response. I was curious and noticed no one had cited a source, so I went to the source. Is it possible that this Senn. CSR doesn't know every single thing about the PX100? I guess. But why wouldn't they refer me to someone who did or just say I'm not sure. Or could they just be holding back because of other reasons?? I dunno. Maybe slightly improved materials from year to year or batch to batch could make a difference in sound? Probably a stretch. I'm still very much a newbie to headphones, but not to sound and sound quality. Hope I didn't step on any toes or light a flame

Hi!

Last week I compared new, white PX100 against 2 pairs of black PX100, one was my, one in the Sennheiser shop. They sounded almost the same way, the difference being that the my black px100 were used for more than 50 hrs, the others were sealed until I opened them; Still the difference was subtle at most. I CANNOT confirm the white and new black PX100 use diff. driver or have different sound. My ears are telling me the contrary - I heard no significant difference between them

Just my 2 cents
