We wanted to share an update for Momentum True Wireless 2 listeners—the all-new High-End Sound Tuning Mode. Known for its detailed and full-bodied sound, MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 (MTW2) has been a favorite for convenient, high-quality music consumption on the move. We’ve updated our companion Smart Control App (v 3.4.1 - iOS, Android) to unlock a new audio profile specifically for MTW2 and its users that have a very discerning ear.

Using DSP, we made three key adjustments to bring the MTW2’s sound closer to that of an audiophile headphone. We started by modeling the effects of the Helmholtz Resonator absorber chamber in the IE 800 series (known as the D2CA) to remove resonance peaking. This paves the way for cleaner, clearer treble reproduction and leads us to update #2: enhanced upper-mid and lower-treble presence. The resultings are more lifelike and vibrant vocals. Lastly, the High-End Sound Tuning Mode better balances punchy, impactful bass with purposeful separation of the midrange (and thus less smearing of the two ranges). Expect faster, more dynamic bass performance and clearer mids—especially in well-recorded music. MTW2’s signature sound is still present, of course, however the refinements in this app update provide a flavor better suited for engaged listening.

The Momentum True Wireless 2 inherited some of the best DNA from the 7mm XWB transducer found in the IE 800. Because this transducer is mated to both MTW2’s support for high-quality codecs and now the Smart Control App’s High-End Sound Tuning Mode, users will have a more intimate audiophile experience within MTW2, on command.

Thanks so much for introducing this new tuning option. It's a definite improvement to my ears, and raises an already brilliant sounding set of earbuds to a new level. It's so fantastic to use the MTW2s out and about, especially in the gym.

Hey guys, quick impression of the new update below, hope this helps some! Posted up a full article here, but if you already know about it, don't need to click through. TLDR, if you’re a current owner of the MTW2, I would definitely advise updating your Smart Connect app to the latest version to get this sound option. If you are a prospective buyer, the changes are not transformative so this update shouldn’t change your decision unless you were specifically put off by the sharp lower-treble tuning before.

The update is subtle but appreciable. Of course, the resulting sound is still nowhere near the ie800 series, but that can be expected given the vast difference in design. The bass is indeed slightly tamed, it is cleaner with a little less presence throughout, especially the mid-bass. The midrange changes are subtle but apparent, and confirmed on sine sweep as my measurement system was giving me inconsistent results with the MTW2. There’s a similar warmth and slightly reduced fullness by virtue of the cleaner bass tuning, but it remains a full-bodied and laid-back earphone. As, in addition, the upper-midrange 3-4kHz region has been brought up slightly so the earphone does sound a bit cleaner and more open in addition to offering greater balance with slightly less laid-back vocals.

The treble has actually been attenuated to my ear, specifically around 6kHz. That said, the remaining treble sounds similar, there’s a similar peak around 10kHz that provides air and headroom. Altogether, I notice slightly better separation and balance. The soundstage is indeed a little wider and transients are presented in a cleaner manner with a more focused detail presentation. Cymbals especially are presented with a more natural texture and decay. When toggling the setting off, you get a little more energy and fine detail presence, but at the cost of a slightly more metallic timbre and diminished instrument body.

EQ settings (mainly).

Sennheiser can't just take what they did with the MTW2 and apply it to the M3. That being said the M3 could certainly do with a lot of FR tweaking to sound better, far beyond what the available EQ settings in the app can do, so it would be most welcome from Sennheiser to do it - but in that case the difference between passive and active will only grow (something that is obviously not a problem for TW earbuds).

The EQ and preset are saved to the earpieces, and are persistent when used with your PC.

@howdy, while there have been several firmware updates for the MTW1, and you may continue using the latest version of the Smart Control app with it, the new tuning preset is exclusive to the MTW2 at this time.

I only just found out about this setting, I much prefer it over the default. Definitely more separation between instrument’s, slightly wider soundstage. Really like it for my tastes, will be leaving it on

They get really deep too. Subsonic frequencies under 10hz, you can for sure feel them--something quite lacking with the Momentum 3, though above 20hz they can get very nasty.

I just got my MTW3 and can’t find “hi end tuning” in the smart control app. Seller said that it should be somewhere in the app, but it got updated and disappeared. Can you give us more info on that?

Having heard the improvements this setting brought to the MTW2’s sound, it would be great if you would implement it for Momentum 4 too. Cutting the bass by two decibels in the parametric eq works well, but i feel there is potential left for an even better sound.
