The HM-901 uses two Sabre ESS ES9018 32-bit DAC chips, provides 24-bit/192kHz upsampling, has a stepped attenuator for volume control, and is said to accept most high-res and lossless audio formats. Its internal headphone amp can be swapped to easily accommodate most headphone impedance's and storage space is practically limitless with SD cards. An optional docking base will provide USB decoding as well as digital inputs and outputs.

In 2007, HiFiMAN established its worldwide reputation for innovation by introducing the word’s first, high performance portable player in the HM-801.

Knowing that was merely a start, in 2009 HiFiMan began intensive research on its 2nd-generation player. Now, three years later HiFiMAN is excited to share initial details of this new generation in the HM-901 high fidelity portable music player– with an overview of its innovative software, design and sound calibration. More information will be revealed as we approach the official launch of this product in the coming months but here is a glimpse of what we are up to.

Gadget Review for the HM-901 by HiFiMan - June 2012

Design Goals of the HM-901 portable music player
1. Audible and Measurable improvement of sound quality from first-generation player
2. Platform that accepts all formats
3. Specific design for 24bit format files*
4. Significantly improve usability, reliability and industrial design*
*HiFiMAN will soon announce more details about points 3 and 4

Software Team

HiFiMAN’s experienced software R&D team has experienced many challenges during the course of this project but have made solid progress during which they developed concepts from "from bottom to high level" and "from algorithm to UI". The HiFiMAN software team, consisting of many veteran engineers had a clear-cut division of labor in algorithm, codec, audio driver, player software, UI design and test. They are from the professional staffs of famous brand player manufacturers, a department manager from a famous chip corporation, a postgraduate from a top Chinese university and CAS, a PhD from a top 20 American graduate school, and senior programmer who once was national famous website CTO in China. A multi-talented diverse team.

Industrial & Structural Design
The design of a portable player is very complex which demands close collaboration between the structural engineer, electronics engineer and industrial engineer. In fact, though the cosmetic design of its current appearance was finished a year ago, the structural design has continued to evolve. Through constant communication, the engineers have successfully solved problems one after another and achieved the goal of utilizing more components in the new player than in the HM-801. After completing the structural design, the team’s structural engineer stated, “There is no more spare space in this new player. This is the most compact design I have ever done!”

Sound Calibration
For the analog section, there are several alternatives and already the prototype has reached the same performance level as HM-801. HiFiMAN however continues to improve its sound quality. A word about design environment -the first-generation HM-801 player developed in 2007 - HiFiMan used a CD player costing about $3,000 as reference to conduct sound calibration. Several years later, HiFiMAN has grown much larger in both scale and financial resources. Now the top audio source equipment in HiFiMAN’s audiovisual room is a DP100 turntable which costs more than $31000 along with a Pacific Microsonic decoder.
Our promise: to make the best sound quality plan at any cost or expense and apply it in the next-generation flagship product--HM-901.

Thank You.
Drew Baird, P.E.

Does anybody know what other brands use the
Sabre ESS ES9018 in their devices as I am very curious .

Thanks ?

iBasso DX100 uses a single ES9018.

I suspect iRiver will implement double-ES9018 in their Astell & Kern product line, soon (maybe the mobile version of the chip (see below), but that is pure speculation on my part.

There is a new lower-power version of the ES9018 announced recently, called the ES9018-2m, which Fiio have already said they will be implementing in their E19 DAC (note, DAC, not DAP):

but James (Fiio CEO) says the ES9018-2m probably won't sound as good as the desktop ES9018 (currently used in the HM-901 and iBasso DX100 DAPs):

Hi Drew,

A friend of mine (Jeff D.) helped me to by from you the HM 901 on the same day you posted on FB (shipped to L.A.).

Just to double check, Does this HM901 come with the "standard" amp board?

Are you guys planning to sell the docking base?

Any plans to sell any cable/convertor to use the balanced output in combination with the balanced board (looking forward to it from your website) ? I am a little bit confused about this, since it seems to be a regular 3.5 output. I have the HE-500 with balanced cables (ALO). Before the HM 901, I have been using the mini balanced connector to an ALO MK3B balanced out put coming balanced from the CLAS-DB.

I got from ALO, the convertor from XLR Balanced to mini-plug (3.5) so that now I can have fun with the HM901, but wondering if there will be soon something to connect this balanced to my HE-500 XLR adaptor.

A final question, are you going to sell the HM901 battery ?

Any thoughts or comments will be very much appreciated.

Best Regards.

Not sure yet. Yes we will be stocking the Docking Base. I think these are a month out. Dont have a final price on it yet.
Yes we will be building dock cables. We just got the docks in.
I will ask if extra batteries will be available.
Yes we can build balanced Headphone cables with the appropriate connector for the balanced card.
