x2 on the hd25, you can use it for both home and portable, great isolation, suitable for your music taste, and you can have them new cheaper from ebay, or even cheaper if they're used!
i'm starting uni next year too. but i'm satisfied with my current state

looks like i might need some closed headphones then, have been looking at the audio technica a700 and they seem pretty nice. what would be better at around the same price

for audio technica cans at your price range i would recommend either the ATH-PRO700 or the ATH-M50s. there is a thread here:

University means library and labs. You definitely do not want to get those Alessandros or Grados unless you are looking to be the most annoying person on campus.

My suggestions would be the HD25, M50, and the K271. The HD25 and M50 are really well built (and the M50s fold), but I find that I worry too much about bending AKG K2xx headbands when I carry them around.

i want to make it clear, i will only be using these phones in my room with my mac and beresford. as i will be using my sennheisers when im in the library or anywhere else outside, as i wearing big headphones in public is very dorky no matter how good the music sounds.
i do want to spend about £150 so those two seem a bit cheap for me
