Recently my e888 earbuds given to me by my father have died after many years service. Obviously finding another pair for remotely cheap online is impossible, so what would be a good modern-ish alternative that won't break the bank? Maybe even something overear if it's slim/portable. Much appreciated

How did the e888 die?
If the cable is broken, just get a replacement cable, or send it to someone who can repair it.

The Yincrow X6 are great for the price, even better is the 7hz Salnotes Zero:2 Things have gotten so good and prices have plummeted on IEMs in the last few years. Repairing those are selling as not working would recoup pretty good money since there's so few for sale.
If it's in the budget, the Moondrop Kato is the most fun pair I have along with the others mentioned.
