hey guys,

i need your help. i plan on upgrading my senn hd-497 to a nice headphone about in the 100 dollar range. are there any ones out there that are good UNAMPED? how are these ? any recommendations?

ps - im planning to run these out of a m-audio 5.1 card, i heard this card had good headphone amplification?

A500s, from audiocubes.com, are probably the best value closed headphone in the world today, IMHO. Other people have different opinions, but that's mine.

I had an m-audio 5.1 external sound card (sonica theatre), it sucked for 2 channel headphones, I sold it. Get an AV-710 if you need internal, or something else if you need external.

source: av710 - $25, set to high sampling bit
cable: cheap diy mini-mini at headfi - $15
amp: cheap amp such as cmoy - $40
headphone: grado sr60 - $70
----
$150

damn well i still think that is too much a starter set up if one would be recommended. (edit for typo) i DO reccomend the av710 and sr60, but i highly not recommend listening to headphones out of the soundcard's line out jack. if you have a decent receiver or something maybe that would do.

there is an amp sold at headroom that has a usb support so it can act as an external sound card.

i heard the m-audio 5.1 card is much better than the chanitech for music and the chanitech card about par to my turtle beach. how do these headphones sound unamped though? any other good ones i should take a look at?

For music, EMU 0404 is better than:

EWX 2496, M-Audio AudiOphile 2496, Chaintech av710, Audigy2 and Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, etc

Check those 2 threads

I don't think the sr60s are so much an upgrade as a different taste. When I traded my 497s for some sr60s, I couldn't wait to get them back. The Sr60s were fun at first, but then I got really frustrated because I could only listen to rock music and couldn't listen to anything else.

If you like the "Sennheiser tone" of your HD497s (the character I can hear from my PX100s to HD650s), consider the HD515/555/595 series for headphones.

I would also recommend the EMU 0404 in the $100 sound card range.
