I currently own a pair of Sennheiser HD558 powered by an Audioengine D1 amp (foobar2000 - asio - mostly flac). It's a brilliant combination and I do love the sound, but want to take things to the next level in the next few months as I scrape together an extra $300 or $400 bucks.
My question is, what's going to get me the most noticeable improvement in sound... a new pair of cans or a new amp? If I got a new amp, they would still power the HD558... a new set of cans would be powered by the D1.
Obviously the Sennheiser HD600 or HD650 is the target upgrade for cans (the HD700 is only $430 on amazon, so maybe). But would I be better off spending the same money on a better amp? Again, which would give me better sound? I could always upgrade both later, but I can only afford to do one at a time.
