I have no affiliation with this. I saw an ad and thought it would be interesting. It has virtually zero info, though. I think I'll follow and see what's up.

I filled out my email address and entered. Looks to be a headphone. Interesting!

The kickstarted for this just lauched midnight PST and in 12 hours, already reached their $100,000 goal. I am curious about how these will sound. Has anyone else demoed or backed these headphones?

I am curious. For $400 bones I'll for sure give them a listen.

I joined the kickstarter after watching the promo-vid. The reactions from people trialing looked quite genuine, it will be interesting to see how it pans out. I saw that each earcup will have four positioned drivers. Has that been done before?

Yes, it's been done before. Usually with subpar results. Hopefully they pull it off.

I hope so! I think it will have more application in a gaming context rather than movies or music. Ive never been involved in a kickstarter before, will be exciting to follow the progress.

Interesting. I don't quite understand the need for the multiple drivers, unless it somehow helps with the implementation of the HRTF filters. Still, may have to try these out.

Joy Lyons, who is one of the founders of Ossic, says this of herself on Angelist:

I have successfully delivered over 35 products to market, and have many favorites. The one I am most proud of is the Ultimate Ears BOOM, mobile speaker. It was the culmination of a multi-year research project that correlated subjective-listener feedback with objective-technical measurements. We asked the better question, “What is the best this product can be,” not “What is competitive with the current market?” I created the metric of Acoustic Density to track the progress of maximum sound quality per product size then pushed the development team to change the internal definition of “good enough.” Together, we delivered a highly successful (~$100M/yr) break-through product to the market.

If this is indcative of her work then she would have good credentials for bringing in reasonable price/performance on the Ossic X, although clearly neither the project nor her CV would naturally indicate an audiophile orientation. To be honest, I don't think that the Ossic X needs to succeed on audiophile grounds: the novelty of the head-tracking, coupled with any sort of merit in the spatialising algorithm, makes these headphones a no-brainer at the price if they can deliver them to market. Quite apart from the games/VR uses, the thought of being able to do my surround sound listening without speakers (yet with head tracking) was enough to get me on board.
