So my 500gb in my desktop has run out and I am looking to add even more storage. I am not going to buy external just because it is so much faster internal. So what should I buy? What is the best price/size/quality right now, and where do I get it? The best deal I've seen so far is a Seagate on Newegg, 750gb for $100, can anything beat that?

sounds like a good deal. I would run a check on Google with the model number to see if there have been any problems with that particular drive. The last 5 drives I bought were all Seagates (most from Newegg) and I've been very happy. The 5 year warranty is excellent as well. That looks like a great price for the 750gb though.

Looks like a good deal.
Bestbuy has seagate 500G at $89, so that would be a fine deal too when you don't need bigger drive. Also check internet to find better deal, but you should consider shipping cost and see if it is really cheap to compare with buying local.

Anyways, I bought 320G western digital AAKS, and 320G seagate last year Christmas season. Both are working fine without a hiccup... at least as of... until today. I prefer seagate over other brands because of personal experience, but your mileage may vary.

Last time I checked, Western Digital released hard-drive with 320gb platters(which have the highest density afaik). The 640gb uses 2 of them, and can be had for $85 at newegg - free shipping.

It should be faster than the older 10,000rpm raptors, and are supposed to be high up there in terms of reliability and noise.

Yep, as of a month or two ago, those were the fastest non-10K rpm drives: I have a 3.2TB RAID5 made out of them

I just want to add something for the sake of external HDD. If you use eSATA, the external drive won't be as slow as an usb external drive.

Whatever it is, I'd go with Seagate. I currently have 5-6 hard drives (I forget how many, actually) from them, the oldest being 6ish years old. Never have I had a single problem with any of them.

That 750GB looks like a solid deal. I might have to consider it myself as well...

Another thumbs up for seagate drives. They are reliable and quiet. I'm also very satisfied with samsung drives. They're also reliable and quiet.

I wouldn't go for any westerndigitals, though. I've had many nightmares with them.
