I use a D1se (original version) connected directly to a power amp using the XLR output. Would you be able to post a link to some more information on the concern you raise please? Thanks.
I have m400 which is basically same dac with different chip and I tried to connect it directly with Pass Labs Aleph 30 and with class D ICE Power amp. On Aleph when powered on first starts with loud pop then right channel delays for about 30 sec, on ICE Power all i got is high pitch sound which could blow tweeters despite all volumes turned to zero. If connected to preamp with XLR there are no issues, also when connected to power amps directly via RCA. I am guessing now that culprit could be absence of output buffer stages on smsl dacs to gain better measurements. If anyone else had issues with smsl dacs please comment.

Thanks for you reply. I'm pleased to say that I've had no such issues with my D1se and actually I think there are substantial differences between this and the M400 beyond just the DAC chip. See the photos below (M400 at the top). The linear power supply on the D1se being the most obvious difference.

Also circuit behind outputs is different which explains normal XLR operation on D1Se2. If there will be also AKM version of this dac i will probably swap. Sound wise and functionally smsl dacs are great but lot of them has some piece of crappy engineering built in unfortunately.

Ah good, you found a better photo of the M400 internals than I could :relaxed:. Totally different as I suspected.

For clarity note that it is an original D1se that I own and have experienced no issues with connected direct to my power amp (Bel Canto Evo4 Gen2). I couldn't comment on the new version 2.

Mine is connected to a VTL IT85 and via XLR to a NAD M2 no issues

Again a DAC only, no AMP. Not for me !
That’s what I like about it, I’ve got a great amp and want a separate DAC, there’s lots of combo options for you

Well all have our druthers ergo, we are all on the money for us! It is like me, I hate MQA so I do NOT buy any thing that has it. But there are plenty of choices for me. I agree with both of you that speaking out on what we like and loathe is paramount to making not only our desires know to manufacturers know but also our genuine needs.

Well said @nioh and you!
