New Beyerdynamic Pro X line: DT 700 Pro X and DT 900 Pro X

Actually, the DT 900 Pro X is already something of an 880 replacement as it's not as open in its construction as the 990. And it has no annoying peak.

I’m not talking about replacing the 880 or 990 premium editions per se, just updating them a bit to modernize them with the impedance and the cable. The senn 650 was supposed to replace the 600 and the 660 was supposed to replace the 650 but all 3 are still around.

Something similar seems to happen at Beyerdynamic: when the DT1770 came out, an outcry followed: why they replaced their beloved 770 with a much pricier new headphone. Even if this was the initial plan (which I don't think), Beyerdynamic issued a note that the DT1770 would not replace their bread-and-butter model but complete the palette to serve sound engineers needs: the DT770 is often used for tracking, where studios purchase quite a number of them -- the DT1770 would make those costs skyrocket -- but the sole sound engineer might want something more linear and be able and willing to spend more.

Now with the new DT700 I think the aim is to actually replace the old series, but to test waters first and let both models coexist. Actually I think the DT700 brings some interesting modernizations with it, from removable cable to lower impedance together with higher sensitivity, while keeping with the more sensible price and repairability of the DT770, but doing away with multiple impedance variants. We'll see if they ever actually kill the DT770, which still seems to sell quite well.

I posted a partial rant / inquiry in another thread in regards to beyerdynamics.

What I dislike is the idea that the DT series are considered durable.

Let's think about it. The headband is metal, and so are the bows. Fantastic. So, now we are going to slap hollowed, somewhat brittle plastic to connect the two metal parts together? Seems reasonable. Metal here and here, huh, seems durable....

Anyways. I am very curious if the X series addresses the durability issue that I guess only I experienced. Since the headband is now redesigned, and the screws, interestingly enough, are facing upwards.

Here's hoping the new line is actually more durable 🤞

I like the 900 Pro X more and more, it's tuned neutral like the HD600 but has more punch and dynamics. And treble while not exaggerated is pretty fine grain and 3D imaging is very precise. It's easy to not recognize it's resolving capabilities with a quick listen as it's neutral and has no fake details but the details are there. Also reverbs keeps reverbing to their actual end, no artificial dryness. Overall, very competent can imo.
