Yes - the NFB-9 allows you to select the filter, while the NFB-8 didn't. Not sure how useful this is, though.

There are some different between the NFB9 ( volume control version and non-volume control version) and NFB8.
The NFB9 output analog parts are newest design and built in the main boards for improve on SQ but spend more worktime to finish , the NFB8 output analog parts built by modules  .
The NFB9 had more options on front plate , the NFB8 doesn't has.

Didn't you already move from the modules to parts soldered on the main boards in the later (2011) version of the NFB-8?
 
Also, I know it's possible to select the filter with the NFB-9, but not the NFB-8. What filter did the NFB-8 use?

The NFB-8 never change the PCB design since it released . Compare the photo in the web can be clear.
It is setting at 2X OS for 192K support, filter response is setting  Linear Phase Brickwall.

Kingwa, what's NFB-8.1 ?  Is it another name for NFB-9 without volume control ?
