New Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter ($39) - an official answer for USB DAC and iPad??
Mar 23, 2016 at 8:42 PM Post #16 of 105
Ricardo,

Good suggestion. Yes, I am using power with my iPad USB power adapter plugged into the new CCK via the Apple USB to lightning cable.

Leo, thanks for sharing your success.

My issues may be withLight Harmonic's implementation:
"When the Geek Out V2 is plugged into the computer there may be a popping noise sent through the headphone outputs. This is caused by the charging of the power caps. This is a conscious design decision to not add a buffer as it would affect the sound quality."

I tested the GO 450 and there was no problem as long as I stuck to either the 45ohm headphone jack or the .45ohm jack. Once I switched a headphone from one to the other, the same problem happened GO shut down.

I had no problems with the Stoner Acoustics UD-110 or Schiit Modi. I think that's because these are purely DAC's and rely on the amp for power modulation. I don't want to go into pseudoscience, just taking my best guess.

So far is it very hit and miss for me. It did not work on:

  1. Meridian Explorer 2
  2. Schiit Bifrost 4490 w/ USB 2

It worked on:

  1. CEntrance DACport HD

I got my USB3 CCK in the mail today too but I'm not having any luck with it.

I have the Lightning end plugged in to the wall and the USB end into my Schiit Yggy. The business end is plugged in to my iPad Pro.

The iPad clearly sees the CCK as it is both drawing power and the CCK appears in the "about" tab in the settings. Anyone have an idea how to switch the sound over to the Yggy? I'm not seeing any options anywhere and if I just play something it still comes out of the iPad speakers.

I have a Yggy too - can/will try it, as soon as this Tidal song is over

But my guess is same issues I had on USB 2 (Bifrost, Gungnir) will still be true for USB 3 (Yggdrasil)

Hmm... I think I'm going to put in a support request with Apple and see what they have to say.

I'm pretty disappointed that the new CCK isn't working with Yggy. I wonder if this is something they can fix, or if it just is what it is. Got a few days before the return window is up, but I really wanted this to work.

Please post back, when you contact Apple!

Yggdrasil did not work for me either. I'm curious what the requirements are too.

EDIT: Success only on CEntrance DACport HD and Apogee Grove.

Here's a summary of results so far with:

A1619
'Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter' according to product page (MK0W2AM/A in US, MK0W2ZM/A in UK and Europe... ), or
'Apple USB Camera Adapter' according to @TMoney 's screenshot of 'Settings > General > About' within iOS 9.3.
Firmware Version 1.0.1
Hardware Version 1.0.0

(via http://www.head-fi.org/content/type/61/id/1596464/ )

Although iPod touch 6th Gen, iPhone SE, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6 support up to 12W charging, I understand they only come bundled with A1385 'Apple 5W USB Power Adapter' (5V @ 1A) (aside from India, where they come bundled with A1357 'Apple 10W USB Power Adapter' (5V @ 2A).

I'd be interested if the users below could also test their various combinations of DAC with no charger, and with A1385 5W charger instead of A1357 10W charger.

EDIT: @RicardoD 's Schiit Modi 2 DAC (but not Magni 2?) work with and without the A1717 or A1605 'iPhone Lightning Dock'.
They do require power into the new A1619 adapter, but work with either the 5W iPhone or 10W iPad charger.
Not sure whether the iPod touch and/or iPhone 6s lose charge, stay constant, or (as with A1357 10W charger) gain charge.

I'm also interested in results from owners of iPod touch 5th Gen, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5, which come supplied with A1385 5W charger but only support 5W charging.

  hearo,

Here is the photo of my setup that is working.  Keeps my iPod Touch charging while outputting USB audio to the DAC.  Great setup.

1. a) @RicardoD : SUCCESSFUL with Schiit Modi 2 DAC, on both iPod touch 6th Gen and iPhone 6s,
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter from A1357 10W charger.

1. b) @RicardoD : SUCCESSFUL with Schiit Magni 2 DAC, on both iPod touch 6th Gen and iPhone 6s,
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter from A1357 10W charger.

Got my adapter today. Using it with Tidal HiFi and a Audioquest DragonFly v1.2 - playback is just fine. Setup as follows:
iPhone 6 Plus -> Lightning USB3 CCK -> Lightning USB Cable w/USB power and AQ FireFly -> AQ NightHawk.

2. @Leo : SUCCESSFUL with Audioquest DragonFly v1.2 DAC, on iPhone 6 Plus,
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter EDIT: from A1401 12W (USA), A1357 10W (USA) and A1265 5W (USA) chargers.

3. a) @hearo : SUCCESSFUL (with niggles) with LH Labs Geek Out V2 DAC, on iPad (which model?),
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter from A1357 10W charger.

3. b) @hearo : SUCCESSFUL (with niggles) with LH Labs Geek Out 450 DAC, on iPad (?),
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter from A1357 10W charger.

3. c) @hearo : SUCCESSFUL (without niggles) with Stoner Acoustics UD110 DAC, on iPad (?),
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter from A1357 10W charger.

3. d) @hearo : SUCCESSFUL (without niggles) with Schiit Modi DAC, on iPad (?),
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter from A1357 10W charger.

4. @TMoney : *UNSUCCESSFUL* with Schiit Yggdrasil DAC, on iPad Pro (12.9-inch),
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter from A1401 'Apple 12W USB Power Adapter' (5V @ 2.1A).

However, iPad Pro (12.9-inch) is currently only product in Apple's line-up (including iPad Pro (9.7-inch)) to support 29W (14.5V @ 2A) charging
( http://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/01/13/regulatory-information-hints-at-a-faster-29w-ipad-pro-charger/ ).

This requires:
- A1540 'Apple 29W USB-C Power Adapter' (MJ262LL/A in US, MJ262B/A in UK and Europe... )
- New 'Lightning to USB-C Cable (2 m)' (MKQ42AM/A in US, MKQ42ZM/A in UK and Europe... ).

@TMoney , are you successful with Schiit Yggdrasil DAC with this combination?

Yggdrasil did not work for me either. I'm curious what the requirements are too.

EDIT: Success only on CEntrance DACport HD and Apogee Grove.

5. a) @sheldaze : SUCCESSFUL with CEntrance DACport HD DAC, on iPhone 6 Plus,
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter EDIT: from A1401 12W (USA) and A1265 5W (USA) chargers.

5. b) @sheldaze : SUCCESSFUL with Apogee Groove DAC, on iPhone 6 Plus,
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter EDIT: from A1401 12W (USA) and A1265 5W (USA) chargers.

5. c) @sheldaze : *UNSUCCESSFUL* with Schiit Bifrost 4490 DAC, on iPhone 6 Plus,
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter EDIT: from A1401 12W (USA) and A1265 5W (USA) chargers.

5. d) @sheldaze : *UNSUCCESSFUL* with Schiit Gungnir DAC, on iPhone 6 Plus,
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter EDIT: from A1401 12W (USA) and A1265 5W (USA) chargers.

5. e) @sheldaze : *UNSUCCESSFUL* with Schiit Yggdrasil DAC, on iPhone 6 Plus,
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter EDIT: from A1401 12W (USA) and A1265 5W (USA) chargers.

5. f) @sheldaze : *UNSUCCESSFUL* with Meridian Explorer2 DAC, on iPhone (?),
when power supplied to new A1619 adapter EDIT: from A1401 12W (USA) and A1265 5W (USA) chargers.

It would be easy to presume that the DACs are at fault, but it appears as though the new A1619 adapter is even having problems with first-party accessories such as the A1277 'Apple USB Ethernet Adapter' (MC704LL/A in US, MC704ZM/A in UK and Europe... ):

I will be keeping an eye on @sheldaze 's findings as I am interested in buying an Explorer 2 alongside the iPhone 7 Plus late this year, so I posted an earlier summary in p35 of the 'Meridian Explorer2 Impressions Thread' thread ( http://www.head-fi.org/t/747327/meridian-explorer-impressions-thread/510#post_12447474 ).

@dabotsonline - great summary!

I bought my iPhone6+ from a nearby US Apple store. I was about to ask you how do I determine which charger I am using, but hope this helps!
Because it is just a USB/Lightning cable, I could easily try a few other chargers, such as the one that comes with an iPad 3 (or any of a number of Google Nexus phone and tablet chargers too).

Turn the charger over

Isn't the iPad 3 USB-A to 30-Pin, not Lightning?

Yes - I would simply plug the USB/Lightning cable, which came with the iPhone, into the USB charger that came with the iPad.
I'll give it a whirl tonight. I am truly looking forward to less lenience on my 2008 vintage Mac laptop. This seems like it'll do!

Primary charger provided with iPhone6+ is A1385. But the rest of the text is truly hard to read. For comparison, the numbers I can make out are input of 0.15A and output of 5V and 1A.

By comparison, the charger provided with my iPad is model A1401, input 0.5A, and output 5.2V and 2.4A. It also says up top that it is 12W.

However, it doesn't behave any differently than yesterday, today with the iPad 3 charger. The Bifrost and Meridian Explorer are not responding.
