New Amp/Source to improve W3

No, if you are going to use LOD, you need an amp. I was going for the case when you get a nice mp3 player that sounds good out of the headphone jack.

So, if I want to use LOD, I must use an amp? Can't I just use volume controller? then, how about the iBasso T4, will it still degrade the SQ fron the LOD?? or what do suggest for the amp?

back to the original question then..which one better...ipod-lod-ibassoT4-W3 or cowonS9-W3?

Probably s9-w3. T4 is midbassy (w3 does not need any of that) and congests the sound.

You cannot use volume control with LOD.

There are amps that will do fine - Pico or P51 for example, plenty of others. But at that point you might as well just get a newer mp3 player.

I mean the external volume controller? I just bought an LOD from head-direct...I would try it first with my fiio E5..how do you think?at least, would I get a better SQ than headphone jack?

Well since you just bought it, you are about to find out for yourself. Not going to guess about that.

Personally I abstain from using the volume controller that came with Westone 3. At first look it is harmless, but actually it congests things a bit and seems to put some pressure in the lower treble. Makes me fatigued after a while.
