Hello everyone,

I've listened to a lot of headphones and surely I've enjoyed some more than others, but I haven't really a baseline for my comparison. What would you suggest to be the most neutral, flat, and uncolored headphone available today and also discontinued?

Thanks!

I would hardly call DT990 Pro uncolored...

In that price range DT880 is damn close. More expensive cans and how they perform is beyond my knowledge.

Uncolored? That's a tough one. The DT880's could fit the bill, and maybe the K501's are well. What headphones have you heard?

The Shure E2? Uncolored? How about...unlistenable!

I wouldn't say the AKG K701 is uncolored, given an odd treble spike (or something similar) that creates harshness and tends to emphasize sibilance (I think the spike is there to fake a sense of detail). Bass doesn't extend very well, either (at least with my setup). They are my favorite headphones, but I don't think they are uncolored or neutral.

Maybe a Beyerdynamic DT-880. The AKG K1000 supposedly has a VERY flat curve, but bass response doesn't go deep. I would say the Sennheiser HD-595 if I didn't find it to be muffled-sounding.

I had the K701's, found them to be more neutral and uncolored than any of my other cans and those that I've spent time with at our KC meets, those being the DT880, HD600, 650 & 555, K501, SA5000, Stax404, and some of the lower-mid level Grados.

After much listening and A/B comparisons, I actually prefer the sound of the HD600 to all of the others, although the Stax does have a magical liquid delivery of the music - but that's just my opinion.

Another vote for the K701. The K601 is probably actually more neutral, but the resolution and instrument separation from the K701 makes it more than worthwhile. Either one is a good pick.

The Stax SR-X mk3 is it. I own the K701 as well and love it; it's the most neutral dynamic I've heard, but it still isn't quite there. The K1000 is very similar in that regard.

Out of those the ones I could afford would be the HD650, K1000, PS1. I don't like the K701 at all... I guess that means I like a colored sound?

Orpheus was the most accurate I have heard... At least it didn't seem to emphacize any particular frequency bands, maybe a slight (very slight) boost in bass??? Thats the only phone I've heard that I would say stretches cleanly from 20-20kHz
DT880, comes close but the treble spike is pretty noticeable IMHO.
